As home professionals, we are often asked questions about design, how to make improvements work and the resale value of decor ideas like kitchen renovations or bathroom updates. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions: 

What is the best way to decorate a small room?

The key to small spaces is to make the size work. Don't overcrowd it with too much clutter. Use a rug to create floor boundaries, add plenty of lighting and use mirrors to reflect the light in the space.

How do I choose the right paint color for my walls?

It depends on how long you plan to continue living in your home. If you are planning on selling within a year or so, stay with a neutral pallette so that you don't have to paint twice. However, if you plan on living there longer whatever color you love, go with that. Just remember that the darker the color the harder it is to cover up in the future. There are no rules saying you have to use a light shade in a small space. Go with what is pleasing to you.

What are some easy DIY home decor ideas?

The possibilities are almost endless. One tip is to change the fixtures in your home. A good door handle and new and updated light fixtures can change a space dramatically. Also, consider featuring a wall as the focal point in your room. Hunt for thrift furniture pieces and paint or stain them to match your aesthetic. Choose decor that adds texture to your home.

How can I mix and match different patterns and textures in my decor?

Think of a theme and apply patterns and textures that match that theme throughout your home.  If you love stripes and plaids and flowers, don't hesitate to decorate with them all, just do so in a way that is balanced throughout your space. Multiple textures can add depth and personality to your design.

What are some tips for decorating on a budget?

The best way to save money while decorating is to reuse, recycle and re-purpose. Give new life to an outdated or worn out piece of furniture by painting it or re-imagining its function. Do you have an old antique pie safe that you don't have the heart to part with? Why not use it to store linens in a guest room or hallway?

How do I choose the proper lighting for a room?

The lighting for your room will depend on the use. The key to making any space feel inviting is to use as much use of natural light as possible. Once you have established your "natural lighting base" then figure out function of the room. Task lighting is vital for your kitchen, and reading lights are necessary for your desk or reading nook. Overhead lights are suitable to illuminate a whole room. Also consider the type of bulb and light color before installing new fixtures.

What are some popular interior design styles trending now?

What is popular now may not be popular in a few years. So remember if you are planning on selling in five years don't design based on current trends unless you absolutely love that trend for yourself. It may not bring you the resale value you were thinking it would. However, current popular design styles include Scandinavian, mid-century modern, Art Deco, country, French country and eclectic. 

How do I create a cohesive look throughout my home?

If you want to ensure that your house flows nicely from room to room, consider tying it together using similar color families throughout the house. Paint is the easiest way to make a statement in each of your rooms.
